The Fraser Valley boys soccer team are the reigning Summer Games champions. The zone 3 team was the first Fraser Valley soccer team to bring home gold in six years. The team had to be thrown together at the last minute due to organizational error and with just over a month to select and train the team the boys surpassed all expectations taking home the gold with an undefeated record.
The Fraser Valley team was a class act on and off the field; the boys showed tremendous discipline in their training and their behavior at the games. The team was a pleasure to be around and amazed their opposition with superior technical and tactical ability.
The Fraser Valley team opened the games with a 5-0 win over the Vancouver Island-Central Coast team. Later that afternoon Zone 3 shocked the field by thumping the traditionally strong Vancouver-Squamish team 4-0. With a spot in the semi-finals secured the Fraser Valley knocked off a pesky Cariboo-North East team 4-1.
Zone 3 was pitted against the Thompson-Okanagan in the semi-final and came out very flat and played from behind the entire game. Finally tying up the game with minutes left the Fraser Valley team was able to take the game to a shootout where they were automatic burying their first three shots while the Zone 3 keeper saved all three and reserved themselves a spot in the final.
The gold medal game would see the Fraser Valley take on the reigning champions, Fraser River-Delta. Zone 3 got on the board early and the lone first half goal was all they needed; they would add one more in the second half for the 2-0 win.
The Fraser Valley is looking to defend their gold medal performance beginning with a full slate of tryouts through April and early May 2008.
